  3. Does the configuration software run on macOS, or Windows only?
  4. Is native Microsoft Dynamic Lighting supported without a driver?
  5. Can the Fn layer be remapped, or only the base layer?

Send those five as written. The speed of the reply tells you as much as the answers do — a factory that has to go and ask engineering is a factory that has not sold this board into a demanding account yet.

Now the word that costs buyers the most money: aluminum.

On a listing for a tri-mode 75 percent wireless keyboard, "aluminum" can honestly describe any of three completely different things. A CNC-machined unibody case cut from a single billet. A top plate or positioning plate, with a plastic bottom case underneath. Or — and this is common — the rotary knob and nothing else. All three are truthfully "aluminum." Only one of them is an aluminum case.

How to verify an aluminum case claim before the PO

  • Ask which component is aluminum, in writing, in the quotation. Case, top plate, plate only, or knob.
  • Ask for alloy grade, wall thickness and the anodizing spec. A supplier that cannot answer is reselling someone else's tooling.
  • Use weight as a sanity check. A genuine aluminum-cased 75% board generally lands north of a kilogram. A board in the 700–900 g range is almost certainly plastic-bottomed, whatever the photo suggests.
  • Request a sample before the pilot order, and put a magnet on it. Aluminum is non-magnetic; a steel plate painted silver is not.

Multi device pairing: what to test, not what to read

Every tri-mode board pairs. The failures show up in the switching, not the pairing. Test these five, in this order, with the actual sample:

  1. How many Bluetooth profiles can be stored at once? Some boards hold three, some hold two.
  2. How long does a profile switch take? Anything past two seconds gets described as "laggy" in reviews.
  3. Does it reconnect automatically after sleep, or does the user have to press the combination again?
  4. Does the Windows/macOS layout toggle actually remap the modifier keys, or just the OS flag?

One more, easy to miss. Ask what happens when the battery runs low. A five-step verification workflow

Three mistakes that cost distributors money

 

Buying on the switch name. "Brown switch" is a description of a feel, not a standard. Two 75% mechanical keyboard samples can carry the same switch label and feel nothing alike. Buy on the sample, not the label.
